ACEI STATEMENT REGARDING
SHOOTING AT SANTANA HIGH SCHOOL:

The members of the Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI) extend their thoughts and prayers to the families and friends of those involved in the March 5th shooting at Santana High School in Santee, California.

Two children lost their lives and 13 others were wounded in yet another senseless outbreak of school violence. Such random acts are deeply disturbing, but, sadly, they no longer come as a surprise. In the United States, violence has entered the doors of our schools and homes--places where children once could feel completely safe.

As we attempt to deal with the grief of these tragic events, we must resolve to work harder to promote the well-being of children in their homes, schools and communities. In our mission statement, we pledge to "focus the public's attention on the rights and needs of children." To that end, the Association for Childhood Education International Public Affairs Committee will introduce a resolution concerning school violence. It will be addressed at the Annual Conference during the organization's business meeting on Thursday, April 5, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The impact of school violence affects more than just the communities involved-- it extends across the country and tarnishes the reputation of the United States worldwide. Our children must be safe, and the sound of gunfire must not be allowed to echo in the hallways of our schools.
