ACEI Statement on Human Rights Day, December 10, 2006
Olney, MD December 10 has been designated Human Rights Day in recognition of the date in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1950 the Assembly passed resolution 423 (V), formally inviting all States and interested organizations to declare December 10 each year as Human Rights Day.
Since 1892 the Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI), has promoted the inherent rights, education, and well-being of all children in the home, school, and community. As a child-centered organization, ACEI is proud to recognize and support Human Rights Day. ACEI, a UN nongovernmental organization (NGO), has consultative status with both the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UNESCO) and UNICEF. ACEI also actively participates as a member of UNICEF's Working Group on the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
ACEI works diligently to promote free and equal public education for all children worldwide. Education is crucial in combating human rights violations, such as discrimination, gender inequality, gender violence, and intimidation. Children's basic needs, such as clean water, food, health care, medication, and education must be met. In addition to these rights, ACEI advocates against the use of child labor, the use of child soldiers, and child sexual exploitation.
