Human Rights Day 2007: Dignity and Justice for All of Us

Olney, MD, December 10, 2007 --- Human Rights Day is celebrated globally each year on December 10, in commemoration of the date in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The Assembly passed resolution 423 (V) in 1950, formally inviting all states and interested organizations to declare December 10 Human Rights Day.

The UDHR and its fundamental values, inherent dignity, non-discrimination, equality, fairness, and universality apply to everyone, everywhere, all of the time. As the preamble of the UDHR declares, "recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world." The UDHR has been translated in over 360 languages and is the most translated document in the world.

For more than a century, the Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI) has promoted the inherent rights, education, and well-being of children in the home, school, and community. As a nongovernmental organization, ACEI has consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). ACEI participates on four Working Groups: Education, Girl Child, Convention on the Rights of the Child, and Children in Armed Conflict. As a child-centered professional organization, ACEI recognizes and supports Human Rights Day.
