NCATE and ACEI

The Association for Childhood Education International is a constituent member organization of NCATE—The National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. NCATE accredits schools, colleges and departments of education that provide professional training for teachers and other school specialists. NCATE is one of two accreditation agencies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education that represent the teaching profession.

ACEI is responsible for the Program Review Process, within NCATE, for institutions seeking national accreditation in elementary education. In addition to coordinating and conducting the Program Review Process, ACEI is represented on the NCATE Board of Examiners (BOE), Unit Accreditation Board (UAB), Appeals Board, Specialty Area Studies Board (SASB), and the NCATE Executive Board on a rotating basis. Members who want to become ACEI/NCATE Program Reviewers should complete and submit a Reviewer Application.

ACEI and the other member organizations that form NCATE represent teachers, teacher educators, policy makers and school specialists. The overall mission of the coalition is to set national standards that help assure quality and credibility in preparation programs for professional school personnel. To accomplish its mission NCATE is striving to link teacher preparation standards or performance based standards with state licensure requirements and advanced certification.

Universities and colleges seeking NCATE accreditation for elementary teacher education programs are required to submit a Program Review demonstrating compliance with the ACEI/NCATE Standards for Elementary Education. The Association for Childhood Education International, which administers the Program Review Process, regularly conducts workshops to familiarize university and college personnel with NCATE's program review process. The workshops are available in two formats:

1) A comprehensive, 1-day training workshop held in conjunction with ACEI's Annual International Conference or, 2) ACEI will send a trained program review specialist to your campus (see On-Site Training).
