KEEPING SAFE


  1. Anytime I leave the house, I will always tell my parents where I am going and who I am with.

  2. I can say NO, even to an adult, if a person tries to touch me in a way I don't like.

  3. If someone tries to take me away, I will yell "NO, NO, NO, SOMEONE IS KIDNAPPING ME!" I will run for help and I will tell someone.

  4. I don't have to keep a secret to myself. I can tell my parents or my teacher if I have a problem or I am afraid.

  5. Nothing goes in my body if it is not good for my health.

  6. Weapons do not give me power or control. I will not play with weapons. I will not use weapons to solve problems.

  7. When I don't like what someone else is doing, I will talk with them to solve the problem, rather than try to hurt them.


KEEPING SAFE, NOTES FOR TEACHERS

The Association for Childhood Education International has produced this poster in an effort to improve the lives of children. ACEI is an advocate for children, because they are unable to advocate for themselves. We offer the following suggestions to teachers so that this poster can be used more effectively with children.
  1. Make as many copies of this poster as you need for the children in your class.
  2. Make use of communitey resources, such as police, firefighters, doctors, and substance abuse agencies. They are all eager to help ensure the safety and well-being of our children.
  3. Role-playing activities help children become effective adovcates for their own safety. Practice appropriate responses to strangers, how to say no to drugs and other harmful substances and conflict resolution strategies. We cannot expect children to put these rules into effect without practice.
  4. The positive behavior focus in the rules should be maintained. For each "don't" or "won't," provide an appropriate behavior in its place.
  5. These rules obviously do not cover all contingencies for safety. Help children develop good judgement for facing the myriad of dangerous situations they will encounter.
