Understanding Innovative Learning Environments

A recently released report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) takes a comprehensive look at an international set of 125 cases of innovative learning environments, which represent 29 education systems from 23 countries. The cases identified in the report, Innovative Learning Environments, highlight those examples that are considered significant departures from the mainstream learning arrangements of their particular system.

One of the main objectives of the report was to understand "learning environments" in general and what makes particular environments "innovative." An important distinction the report makes is that a "learning environment" is an organic, holistic concept, an "eco-system" of factors that contribute to the activities and the outcomes of learning. Innovations may take place within a school or classroom structure, others may not. Therefore, the report utilizes different units of analysis beyond the institutional variables often attributed to school environments. Forty cases were analyzed in-depth, utilizing more appropriate units of analysis; they shape a new framework for looking at innovative learning environments that provide the structure for the report.

The report is part of a three-phase international study being conducted on Innovative Learning Environments (ILE) by the OECD Center for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI).
