The Human Rights Council Adopts CRC Complaints Mechanism

A big step for the protection of children's rights

This past June, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) Complaints Mechanism. This new Optional Protocol allows the HRC to evaluate the communication between children and their representatives alleging violations of their rights.

The adoption of a formal complaints mechanism has been applauded by international child's rights advocates, as the global campaign for such a mechanism has been ongoing since 2006. The final draft of the Optional Protocol is expected to be presented before the U.N. General Assembly for adoption in December 2011.
