Improving Teacher Training Programs

In the U.K., the University of Buckingham Center for Education and Employment released a report comparing and evaluating three main teacher training routes: Universities and Colleges (UNIs), School-Centered Teacher Training (SCITT), and Employment-Based Teacher Training (EBITT). 2011 is the first year the Training and Development Agency of Schools (TDA) released available publications on EBITT programs. The report, Good Teacher Training Guide of 2011, focuses on current teaching programs and provides quantified sources as a potential starting point for major reform. Results indicate the need for quality teaching programs for positions in all subject areas.

In the U.S., the Academy for Educational Development (AED) supported Teachers for a New Era (TNE) on their 2011 publication addressing the need for teacher training program reform in order to further student success in the classroom. The report, Pursuing Excellence in Teacher Preparation: Evidence of Institutional Change from TNE Learning Network Universities, suggested major categories for change.
