Draft Executive Summary
Education plays a central role in national development. People are the real wealth of nations—and education enables them to live healthier, happier, and more productive lives. There is broad agreement, backed by research findings, that education enhances people’s ability to make informed decisions, sustain a livelihood, adopt new technologies, be better parents, cope with shocks, and be responsible citizens and effective stewards of the natural environment. These links between education and the quality of people’s lives are why the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) recognize children’s right to education. These links also translate into benefits beyond the individual and the family—economic prosperity, and less poverty and deprivation. Illiteracy, ignorance, and low skills cannot be the foundation of development. Read more of the draft report at:
