Canadian Government Supports Play-based Learning

An official statement was released by the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC) which underscores the essential role of play-based learning for the overall development and well-being of children.

The statement came as a result of the World Conference on Early Childhood Care and Education, where experts, scientists, and government representatives convened, supporting the benefits of play in early learning.

Outlined within the statement is how learning through play is supported by science, experts, and children and parents.  The statement also distinguishes between teaching by rote and intentional teaching. “Intentional teaching involves educators being deliberate and purposeful in creating play-based learning environments—because when children are playing, children are learning.”
