Promising School-based Programs for Gender Equity

Findings from the Gender Equity Movement in Schools (GEMS) program report in Mumbai, India suggests school methods that incorporate student self-reflection increase positive behavior and relationships between boys and girls resulting in more support of girls pursuing higher education and boys contributing to household work. Also, schools that support learning and non-violence increased gender equality in classrooms. Overall, the promotion of games, debates, and discussion on major topics in the classrooms was found to be more successful in India's traditional schooling system.

Gender Equity Movement in Schools (GEMS), a school-based intervention program developed by the International Center for Research on Women in partnership with the Committee of Resource Organizations for Literacy and the Tata Institute for Social Sciences, promotes gender equality by initiating positive change processes for both girls and boys in order to structure individual development.
