Connectors:
Content Area Studies for Early Childhood

Developed through the expertise of early childhood educators from four countries, spanning three continents, Connectors is written to provide teachers and child care directors with authentic studies, particularly in the social studies.

The developmental-interaction approach advocates that children should study their immediate world of family, home, school, and community. Most of the topics are directly related to the ecology of all children. A few of the studies may be more culturally specific.

Content area studies allow teachers to organize content into meaningful and interesting contexts. This integrated approach to curriculum development allows for and encourages students to pursue intererests related to content. Emphasis is placed on the process as well as the product. How children learn while engaged in the study is equally as valuable as what they learn. As children become co-investigators with the teacher and interact with the environment, they become independent learners who are capable of making decisions. Because children are involved in their own learning, they are constantly evaluating their own process.

Every study in this text has been taught by one of the authors, and tested in the real world with children.
