FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Olney, MD, May 9, 2008--The devastating cyclone that struck in Myanmar on May 2, 2008, has resulted in the deaths of thousands of people. When disasters strike, children may be disproportionately affected. The survivors of the disaster face many risks, including disease and starvation. Many are left homeless, without food, water, and clothing. Children are especially vulnerable during these critical times, and many have been orphaned.
The U.N. estimates that 1.5 million people will be affected by this tragedy. The Association for Childhood Education International is deeply saddened by the desperate crisis in Myanmar, and we join our members worldwide in offering condolences to the people who have been affected by this disaster.
ACEI members join with other global citizens throughout the world in seeking ways to aid in this crisis. We hope that humanitarian relief will quickly reach the survivors of this terrible tragedy.
