Resolution on Climate Change in the Lives of Children and Youth
Whereas ACEI is an international organization, and
Whereas ACEI is concerned with the welfare of all children and adolescents, and
Whereas ACEI, in accordance with the United Nations' Department of Public Information - Non-Governmental Organizations (DPI-NGO) Framework for Action on Climate Change, recognizes "that we share one planet and its environment, as well as a responsibility to protect future generations," and
Whereas governments consider climate change to be "one of the most serious threats to humanity and our environment," and
Whereas changes in the climate, if not addressed, will cause "catastrophic effects to the Earth's ecosystems, biodiversity, and infrastructure," and will significantly reduce the "availability of food, water, energy and transport," and
Whereas climate change, if not addressed, will additionally cause "massive migration of populations and the possible destruction of entire cultures and small island nations," and
Whereas climate change, if not addressed, will also cause "increased spread of vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue fever," and will have overall "negative impacts on human health and life expectancy" (DPI-NGO, 2007, p.1);
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that:
ACEI and its members will diligently work to raise awareness and engage in advocacy to reduce the negative impact of climate change, and
ACEI will recognize the importance of educating children and youth to be responsible for positive changes in the climate through child-centered appropriate curriculum and advocacy, and
ACEI will seek out opportunities to collaborate with other educational organizations and agencies to ensure that children and youth are educated about the threats of climate change, and will take action to reduce such threats, and
ACEI will continue to support families in actively reducing negative changes in our environment, and
ACEI will actively support the 2007 United Nations Conference Declaration on Climate Change agreed upon by the DPI-NGO community, and
ACEI will work to promote world-wide initiatives that support the preservation of our planet.
